Not Your Mama's Curves

Curves, a womens’ only workout facility in Lubbock, has always had a reputation of being for older women. The local owner is trying to change that.

Pattie McMillan, the owner of Curves in Lubbock, told us that Curves is a franchise workout facility that focuses on low impact, circuit workouts that can be done in 30 minutes. Curves also offers a meal plan program and one-on-one coaching.

Curves may have the stereotype of being for older women, but McMillan said that it is also ideal for college students. She said that the fast workouts, easy meal plans, and practical goals makes the plan easy to stick to.

“One of the things that makes it really nice for college students is that we are able to plan a menu,” McMillan said. “We are able to look at your budget, plan accordingly, and get things that you can grab and go in between classes”.

Taylor Borland, a senior exercise and sports science major from Frisco, Texas, tried the Curves Complete plan and had great success. The first time she tried it, she lost over 20 pounds. She has recently started back on the program, and has had consistent results.

Borland said that she has tried other diet plans before, and that they did not work for her. She said that the Curves Complete plan works because it is realistic.

“My breakfast was yogurt, granola, and then my snack was, like, 12 almonds,” Borland said. “And then my meal would be a tuna sandwich, and then another snack of cheese and crackers. And then for dinner, I could pretty much branch out”.

McMillan said that the reason the meal plan works is because it is simply a healthy diet. She said that you can work almost anything into your diet, even sweets and alcohol, as long as you consume them in moderation. She said that this is another reason why the plan is great for college age women.

Borland went on to say that having a personal coach helped a lot as well. She said that one of her coaches was around her age, so it made it easier to be honest with her. She said that checking in weekly with her coach helped to keep her on track.

“This ain’t your Mama’s Curves anymore!,” McMillan said.

Curves has programs starting as low as $12.95 per week, which includes workouts, a meal plan, and coaching. Borland said that the low price helped her to choose Curves, especially on a tight college budget.

Curves has two locations in Lubbock. The Southeast location is at 8004 Indiana Ave. in Melonie Square shopping center. The closest location to Texas Tech University is at 1901 West Loop 289, across the street from Academy.
