Inside Peek: Ad Team, Sixth Meeting

Sixth Meeting

At this point, we are a lot more organized and we have a good grasp of how the meetings are going to run. We began our meeting with a group photo. Bichard was very excited because it was the first year that everyone was there for the picture. This obviously means that we are all on top of it and going to win!

Secondary research was the first group to present their findings. They went over a SWOT analysis. When I was learning how to create a SWOT analysis in classes I did not realize how important they were for understanding the company compared to their competitors. For those who have not gone over SWOT, it is strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the company. Since Mary Kay has been around for 50 years, there is a lot of research about the company and competitors. We learned several things that we did not know about the company and what consumers are looking for, like philanthropic work and going green.

The second idea group analyzed different makeup advertisements to make sure that we are able to stand out, if we chose to create a print ad. They also discussed two different ideas they were working on that would fit Mary Kay. At this point, it is difficult to begin a campaign since we have not started our primary research.

The first idea group analyzed different online advertisements, mainly Twitter and Instagram, to see what other companies are currently doing. We also talked about the current Mary Kay app for iPhone. The app has very cool features that we were able to explore and find out more about the company. They discussed their ideas for creative that they have been working on, but were still in the planning phase. They also covered how we should layout the giant corkboard in our room. We want to make sure that the board is used well.

For our group, we discuss different options on how to hold focus groups and seeing if we could use the nice research lab in the Media and Communication building. Megan, our director, is currently talking with Glenn Cummins about reserving the rooms. I hope that I will be able to moderate some of the focus groups. It would be a good experience.

After the meeting, our group and all the directors stayed later to work on the finalized survey. We went through each question one by one to make sure it made sense and would get the information we were looking for. It did not take us very long, even though we were all being very technical. It is difficult to create a perfect survey that will make sense to everything and get the exact information we want. We also have to remember that it is important to figure out if we want multiple choice, choose one, or fill in the blanks because we do not want to be leading.

Box of Wisdom
