Research Round Up, Feb. 13

Do you need some extra credit for one of your classes? Many College of Media and Communication classes offer extra credit through Sona System research participation. There are many credit opportunities available right now to help you get to an A!

One study being conducted right now will grant you two credits, which would help any grade. The “College Student Health Study” is an online study that can be taken anywhere with an Internet connection. According to Rebecca Ortiz, an assistant professor in advertising and one of the researchers on the project, the survey could take up to two hours, but typically lasts a little more than an hour.

The study is in partnership with the psychology department, which means psychology students can take the survey as well, through their Sona System. The study evaluates how media can influence students behavior. Autumn Shafer, an assistant professor of public relations, said the study covers different topics.

“Essentially, we’re getting an evaluation of some of the, what some people may consider, risky behaviors that college students do,” Shafer said. “You know, that’s different from every college. So, we’re trying to get a sense of what that’s like here at Tech.”

Ortiz and Shafer said the results of this study can help researchers understand how to better intervene and treat risky behaviors on college campuses.

There are four other active studies on Sona Systems this week. One of them, “Media Platform Use Study,” is a quick 30-minute survey that will earn you half a credit. The other three are in-lab studies that must be completed in a research room, but are worth more credits.

Get those credits in early, and sign up for a research study soon!
