Research Round Up, Jan. 30

Many classes in the College of Media and Communication require students to participate in research studies. Sometimes it is hard decide which one to participate in. The Center for Communication Research and The Hub are teaming up to bring you a look at what studies are currently being conducted in our new bi-weekly article, Research Round Up.

There are currently three studies being researched in the college. Two of these are online surveys, and one is an in-person study. All of these would be great options to get those research credits in!

“It’s important because students are motivated to learn…”

Establishing Value in Public Relations Education is an online study only available to public relation majors who are currently taking a PR class. The conductor of the study, doctoral student Nicole Lee, said the purpose of the research is to evaluate how students respond to different classes.

“It is important because students are more motivated to learn when they believe what they are being taught is valuable,” Lee wrote via e-mail.

Another online study being conducted is something  every college student should know about: Facebook. Examining University Messages on Facebook is a quick online survey that only takes 15 minutes for students to complete. In the survey, students will be shown Facebook posts and asked to evaluate them. Graduate student Alan Abitbol hopes the study will help communicators learn what messages work best on Facebook.

“This new information may help in the future.”

The third study going on right now will make you laugh. Literally. Evaluating Television Sitcoms is an in-person study conducted in MCOM 052. Students will simply watch a sitcom and then provide feedback. This study will take a little longer than the online surveys, but it is worth more credit.

“Research is designed to benefit society by gaining new knowledge,” said research conductor Jessica El-Khoury. “This new information may help people in the future.”
