Women’s HERstory Month

Texas Tech University’s Student Intersectional Leaderships Council kicked off a series of events for Women’s History Month with karaoke on March 1.

To start things off, SILC went with the theme Women’s Herstory Month: Disco Fever for karaoke night. For two hours, attendees gathered at the Black Cultural Center to celebrate. Multiple Tech organizations helped host the event with Women in STEM and the Hispanic Student Society, just to name a few. The event consisted of a night of karaoke, food and beverages, and two separate competitions: best disco attire and a sing-off. Winners received gift certificates.

Kaylee Sexton, president of SILC, spoke about how the event fits this month’s storytelling theme.

“Celebrating women who tell our stories,” Sexton said. “In one of the ways that women have told their stories throughout history is by singing instead of actually speaking out against injustice.”

Women’s History Month is celebrated throughout March. History.com describes the month as “A celebration of women’s contribution to history, culture and society in the United States since 1987.”

“A time to reflect and reiterate the progress women have made throughout history,” said Mariana Sandoval, an attendee. “An opportunity to remind women of the power they have.”

SILC has made it a goal to make Women’s History Month memorable and interactive for female-identifying students.

“They would sing, and that was a form of power for them,” Sexton said.

SILC Queer representative Katie Rose Jensen emphasized the importance of storytelling and song.

“All of our stories deserve to be told and now they hopefully can be,” Jensen said.

SILC’s Women’s History Month events will continue to have events throughout March.
