Coming Out in Conservative West Texas

Each October, LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning or Queer) History Month is celebrated to recognize the struggles homosexual and genderqueer individuals have faced, as well as to celebrate the progress society has made toward acceptance.

A noteworthy day within this month of remembrance is National Coming Out Day, celebrated on Oct. 11. This year, just before Texas Tech Pride Week, the Texas Tech Gay-Straight Alliance held a closed meeting for members of the LGBTQ community at the university to share, or just listen, to coming-out stories from students and faculty.

But what is it like to come out in conservative West Texas?

In this audio story, Sarah McCrory, Reese Ramsey, Katie Miller and Walker Williams describe what is was like to reveal their sexuality.
