With more than 120 students and professionals in attendance, the Texas Association of Broadcasters Newsroom Workshop was a success! One look at #tabttu on Twitter can prove it.

Guest presenter from KARE-11 in Minneapolis, Jonathan Malat, began the day with a picture of the audience of the first session, Storytelling Mastery. Malat presented programs throughout the day with his reporting and photographer partner, Boyd Huppert.

The first session of the day was attended by everyone. The KARE-11 reporters gave advice about finding a good character to make a story powerful. Huppert presented numerous news packages featuring characters that you remember. There was a group discussion about what was good and what was bad about each package. Malat and Huppert then got interactive, by interviewing student Philip Arabome about his hobby of building with Lincoln Logs. Of course, this was simply a demonstration of how to conduct a good interview.

Journalism student Shelby Kimball tweeted throughout the day.

“So great seeing @BoydHuppert and @jonathanmalatspeak today! What an awesome session!! #tabttu,” Kimball tweeted.

One session attended by many students was entitled “How I Got My First Newsroom Job.” KLBK reporter Brittany Escobar and KCBD digital content writer Hannah Fields presented do’s and don’ts of successfully getting a job. One of the major themes was how important networking is. Escobar explained she got her first internship through an old friend from her hometown. That internship soon turned into a job. Both Fields and Escobar accepted resumes from students, so they can begin networking.

Three Texas Tech professors presented programs at the workshop. One of the most anticipated seminars was taught by Kelly Kaufhold, Ph.D. “Storytelling by Smartphone” is a class  currently offered in the College of Media and Communication. Kaufhold brought his innovative approach to reporting to professionals who may not be aware of the capabilities of their iPhones.

One of the most frequently used hashtags at the conference was #LesRose. Todd Chambers, Ph.D., chairperson for the journalism and electronic media department, tweeted voraciously throughout the day.

“We aren’t reporters, we are storytellers #CBSNews #LesRose #TABTTU,” Chambers tweeted.

At the end of the day, reporters from around the area shared their gratitude for the day of learning.

“Truly a great day at #tabttu. Inspiring and educational stuff, especially from @BoydHuppert. Sincerest thanks and respect,” tweeted Fox 34 morning anchor James Eppler.
