Omega Delta Phi Celebrates 26 Years of Foundation

Twenty-six years ago in Lubbock, seven students at Texas Tech University founded Omega Delta Phi Fraternity. Omega Delta Phi, also known as ODPhi, is a Latino-founded multicultural service/social fraternity that aims at graduating its members while giving back to the community. ODPhi was founded on Nov. 25, 1987, originally to focus on the Hispanic community. At the time there was no other organization focusing on this specific group on campus. As demonstrated by its philosophy of “One culture, any race” philosophy, ODPhi is open to men of all backgrounds.

Omega Delta Phi has more than 50 chapters at universities nationwide and continues to grow every year. The fraternity has a national partnership with Court Appointed Special Advocates and assists in recruiting volunteers and raising funds for local CASA programs.

ODPhi at Tech is a part of the Multicultural Greek Council and is made up of men of all different backgrounds and members of other organizations, including Saddle Tramps and the Texas Tech chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens. The Alpha chapter celebrated its 25th anniversary by hosting the annual National Conference in Lubbock in the summer of 2012. The fraternity has been in the spotlight lately, winning the campus-wide Homecoming Spirit Board competition for two years in a row, first with a Chuck Norris-themed board and then with a Jurassic Park head cut-out board.

Texas Tech dedicated a conference room in the Student Union building to the fraternity in 2002. ODPhi is the only organization to have one. It is currently relying on donations in order to upgrade the room and include important fraternity memorabilia.
