See Full Election Coverage

With runoffs looming, The Hub@TTU is giving voters a final look at the remaining Student Government Association presidential hopefuls and their executive boards. Two campaigns, One Tech and Experience Where It Counts, are continuing to campaign for students’ votes before the runoffs on March 6 and 7.

Each campaign’s presidential candidate was given one take to state their platform and convince voters to support them. The Hub@TTU gave each campaign one take to showcase presidential contenders Hayden Hatch and Tyler Frevert’s final efforts to pull in voters.

Experience Where It Counts is comprised of Tyler Frevert for president, Peter Brady for external vice president, and Taylor Shackelford for internal vice president. Their campaign’s graduate vice presidential candidate, Pradeep Attaluri, was elected to his position last week.

One Tech’s campaign includes Hayden Hatch for president, Stetson Whetstone for external vice president, and BaLeigh Waldrop for internal vice president.

Each campaign’s executive candidate issued statements about their plans for public service if elected, which were also published on the official ballots for the election.

One Tech

Hayden Hatch’s presidential platform includes plans for Raider Card expansion and bus route issues:

“My name is Hayden Hatch, and I want to serve you as Student Body President to answer the needs you have expressed.  If elected, I want to:

  • Expand dining bucks to local restaurants and convenient stores so you can swipe your Raider Card and pay for food at a discounted price.
  • Ensure TTU has the same spring break as other Big 12 and Texas universities.
  • Bring back the old busing routes so you can get to your classes without switching buses.

I will work hard everyday with my ONE TECH team to make Texas Tech a better place for you.  I would be honored to serve you as Student Body President!”

External vice presidential hopeful Stetson Whetstone also has intentions for the bus routes on campus as well as off, among other transportation issues:

“My name is Stetson Whetstone, and I am a junior RHIM major from Austin, Texas. If elected, I will:

  • Revert the bus routes back to how they were last year.
  • Expand S-Bus into Tech Terrace with more apartment stops.
  • Create multiple “Bike Barns” around campus.
  • Lobby the State Legislature for a lower tax on textbooks.

I would be honored to have your vote and to further serve the student body!”

BaLeigh Waldrop, running for internal vice president, proposes programs to boost senate involvement and student safety:

“My name is BaLeigh Waldrop, and I am a junior accounting major from Hobbs, N.M.  I have been involved in SGA since my freshman year, and have enjoyed the opportunity to serve students. If elected, I want to:

  • Empower the Senate to bridge the gap between SGA and student life.
  • Start a “Mix at 6” for Senate to network with Student Orgs before meetings.
  • Create a SafeWalk program for students walking alone late at night.

I would be honored to have your vote and serve as Internal Vice-President!”

Experience Where It Counts

Possible president Tyler Frevert said his close work with university administrators will allow him to be a voice for the student body:

“My name is Tyler Frevert, I am a junior Finance major from Dallas, Texas. It would be an honor to be your next student body president within the Student Government Association. I have spent the last two years working with Dr. Nellis and other university personnel. I want to implement a monthly breakfast where students can sit down with Dr. Nellis and I for an open discussion over campus life. Additionally, I want to establish a SGA Newsletter to promote unity. This letter will entail what is going on with SGA, legislation, student organization accomplishments, and services available. Lastly, I want to continue the work I have already begun to bring your raider bucks off campus. I believe that I have the experience where it counts to ensure that student concerns are heard and addressed. I love Texas Tech, and transparency and selfless leadership is what my team represents.”

Taylor Shackelford, a candidate for the office of internal vice president, believes his experience in parliamentary procedure will be a benefit to senate proceedings:

“My name is Taylor Shackelford, I am sophomore majoring in agricultural communication and international business, and I would love to be your next vice president of internal affairs. I have worked with parliamentary procedure for over seven years and if elected, I would love to increase the transparency of what is going on in our senate meetings. I want students to vote online for legislation we are discussing through a program called MySenate and then be able to track what is happening with each piece of legislation that is discussed with an initiative tracker. Lastly, I would love to improve and reform the way our senators are educated. I believe that I have the necessary experience where it counts to improve the efficiency of our senate meetings, allow for greater constituent participation, and ensure that all initiatives are accomplished effectively.”

Current SGA chief of staff Peter Brady wants to continue a career of serving the student body with plans for legislation both university- and statewide:

“My name is Peter Brady, I am a junior finance major from Plymouth, Minnesota. I am seeking the office of vice president for external affairs because I am passionate about this university and it would be an honor to continue to serve the student body. I currently serve as the SGA chief of staff and have previously served as the director of outreach. I want to bring the student body together for a Lubbock-wide community service event called “Tech the Town”. Additionally, I want to ensure student safety through the implementation of a Saturday game day bus route bringing students to and from campus. Next year is a legislative year, and I want to increase the lobbying efforts of the higher education code. I believe that I have the experience where it counts to ensure student safety and a positive relationship at all levels of government.”

Voting online will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. and conclude Friday at 5 p.m. Results will be announced soon after in the SUB.
