Students Reactions To Superbowl Commercials

On the evening of Feb. 2, many Americans gathered around their TVs as they awaited not only the Super Bowl, but the Super Bowl commercials.

Zachary McKinney, a junior chemistry major from Lewisville, Texas, said he always looks forward to watching the commercials during the game, but was let down this year.

“I thought they were a little not as exciting as they have been in the past,” McKinney said. “They went for more of an emotional appeal instead of the normal comedy, humor that we’ve come to expect from Super Bowl commercials.”

McKinney said nothing stood out much this year and he was less entertained.

Chelsea Johnson, a junior pre-nursing major from Austin, Texas, said she viewed the majority of the Super Bowl commercials as OK this year, but she did enjoy the Doritos commercials.

“They were really unique,” Johnson said, “and there was a funny one with the time traveling capsule thing, and a cardboard box. It was pretty funny. It reminded me of ‘Back to the Future.’”

Johnson said when viewing commercials she enjoys the comedies more.

Sullivan said he believes that aside from football fans, a large portion of people watch the Super Bowl solely for the commercials.

“People like to laugh,” Johnson said. “The Super Bowl is supposed to be a fun event.”

Jordan Critchlow, a junior microbiology major from Livingston, New Jersey, said he was not impressed with the commercials this year.

“They were pretty bad,” Critchlow said. “None of them were funny, most of them were about cars, and I don’t really like Doritos.”

Critchlow said if he had to pick a favorite, he would say the Bud Light commercial.

“It was like a long party,” Critchlow said. “One guy just went through a bunch of crazy things. It was like a thriller.”

Andrew Sullivan, a junior mechanical engineering major from McKinney, Texas, said that contrary to the others, he enjoyed the Super Bowl commercials this year.

“My favorite commercial was the one with the little girl who rode the dog in the Doritos commercial, where she lassoed them away from her brother.”

Sullivan said he found the Doritos commercials to be funny, different and unique, and that most people look for comedies when watching commercials.

“The Super Bowl is an entertaining event,” Sullivan said. “You don’t want to have seriousness with something that’s relaxing to watch.”

Sullivan said he believes that aside from football fans, a large portion of people watch the Super Bowl solely for the commercials.

McKinney said nothing stood out much this year and he was less entertained.

“The party I was at,” Sullivan said, “pretty much every girl that was there just wanted to watch the commercials during the Super Bowl, not really the game.”

Sullivan said he believes the Super Bowl commercials will receive more viewers compared to any other day simply because it is the biggest football game of the year.

“It’s the Super Bowl,” Sullivan said. “It’s the final of the NFL. There are a lot of people that watch it. It’s the sport for America.”
