May the Circle Be Unbroken

The sororities of Texas Tech are giving back to women, one day at a time.

Representatives from all 11 sororities make up the Panhellenic Council and come together this week to fundraise and increase awareness for the sorority-wide philanthropy, Circle of Sisterhood. By donating a dollar, participants can enter a drawing for a Yeti cooler or a pair of Tory Burch riding boots. But it’s not all about the prizes.

Circle of Sisterhood is an organization that provides opportunities for underprivileged women to pursue higher education. All fundraising the group does will go toward scholarships and funds.

“You get to represent something that’s bigger than just your own sorority,” Kathryn Kallina said.

The current recruitment director for Panhellenic Executive Council, Kallina said she loves serving on the council and for Circle of Sisterhood because she gets to show Texas Tech the positives of the Greek community.

Panhellenic Council will have a booth for the rest of the week outside the Student Union Building. The council has already raised more than $2,000 for the Circle of Sisterhood through giveback nights with local restaurants.

Alex Skartsiaris, the Panhellenic Executive Council treasurer, said working with Circle of Sisterhood and the executive council was also an opportunity to give back to herself.

“I met so many amazing people,” Skartsiaris said, “I met some of my best friends.”

Thursday night at 8 p.m., the council and Tech Activities Board will partner to present a free event. The organizations will show an awareness video about Circle of Sisterhood in the SUB, followed by a screening of Grown Ups 2.
