Cuts For The Cause

A Texas Tech organization wants people to cut their hair off.

Cuts for the Cause, a hair donation drive for women with cancer, will be held at Aalon Salon Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and people donating will receive free shampoos and haircuts.

Kelsey Holeman, a stylist at Aalon Salon, said she is donating her time to remember her mother’s friend who died of breast cancer two years ago on Holeman’s birthday.

“I have seen it, and it’s hard and I would like to help in any way that I can.” Holeman said.

Talia Harmacek, a member of Tech’s Professional Convention and Management Association, said the hair will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

“They give their wigs to women with cancer,” Harmacek said, “whereas Locks for Love gives them to children.”

Unlike Locks for Love, which requires at least 12 inches of hair, Pantene only requires 8 inches, and the lower minimum length requirement will hopefully allow more people to donate, she said.

Anyone who meets the length requirement and has non-dyed, non-bleached hair can donate, Harmacek said, and after donating they will receive a free shampoo and haircut.

“Some people just think we’re just chopping of their 8 inches and just like ‘OK bye’,” she said “but you’ll get an actual haircut.”

Not only will hairdressers from Aalon be there donating time, she said, but also hairdressers from other salons.

Stylist Holeman said she expects to see people asking for very short haircuts so they can donate more inches of hair.

“Probably a lot of bobs, a lot of swing bobs,” she said. “I would love to do some pretty short haircuts. I think that would be pretty fun.”
