Let The Trekkies Rejoice!

And so it returns. Paramount Pictures has now officially given us a taste of what is to come in the years-awaited sequel to “Star Trek” (2009) – “Into Darkness.”

The official synopsis:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

IMDB, so far, has been pretty mum on casting, with only one real interesting tidbit: Benedict Cumberbatch is rumored to reinvent the villain Kahn, first brought to life by Ricardo Montalban in the 1982 “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn.” The release details Mr. Cumberbatch as a leading member of the cast, but all we can do is assume … and hope. Of course, for those in the Trekkie-know, if Kahn is the villain in this film, what does this mean for Spock?

“Star Trek Into Darkness” is scheduled for release May 17, 2013, but for those die-hards who just cannot wait, Paramount Pictures said the first 9 minutes of the film will premiere during previews with “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” ONLY in about 500 IMAX 3D theaters beginning December 14th. Live long and prosper.
