West Village Residence Hall Ready For Move In

As Texas Tech continues to pursue the goal of 40,000 students by 2020, one partial solution to the problem of where to put them is the new West Village Residence Hall, unveiled in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday. Afterward, attendees toured the inside of the new facility.

The new housing complex is a 234, 501-square-foot complex featuring many different room styles, according to a press release from Tech. There are 61 one-bedroom units, 47 two-bedroom units, and 75 four-bedroom suites. Each unit has its own restroom and a full kitchen, with appliances included. The residence hall is intended for upperclass and graduate students.

“Texas Tech is booming, absolutely booming,” Sean Duggan, director of student housing, said during the press conference. “This is a physical representation of that growth.”

University President M. Duane Nellis said studies show that students who live on campus have a higher graduation rate than students who do not. By having the new residence hall, Nellis said Tech’s retention and graduate numbers will continue to rise. Nellis also said plans to build other residence halls are in early stages.

The West Village Residence Hall made news last semester when it was announced that of-age students living in the residence hall would be allowed to have alcohol on the previously alcohol-free campus.

The West Village complex is located east of Knoxville Avenue on 19th Street. Students will be able to move into their new homes on Aug. 16.
