Top 5 Must See Movies of 2014

So far, 2014 has been a great year for film, and it looks like it will continue to “wow” audiences.

From a “reboot” of an old classic to a real-life remake of an animated Disney movie, these five films will not let you down.

1. “This Is Where I Leave You”

Based on a novel by Jonathan Tropper, “This Is Where I Leave You” is a story about four siblings that have been brought together by their father’s death. This makes them face their fears, past and future.

Some of the stars in this film include: Tina Fey, Jane Fonda, Jason Bateman and Dax Shepard.

The film also has an alternative, folk-sy soundtrack, including new music from an upcoming group, The Distant Cousins.

2. “Godzilla”

“Godzilla,” starring Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad,” is not a remake of the original from 1998; it is a “reboot.”

The movie begins in 1999 when a Japanese nuclear plant is somehow destroyed, and Joe Brody’s (Cranston) wife was killed. Several years later, intent on finding the reason for the destruction, Brody and his son go back to Japan to uncover the truth.

Other stars in the film include: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins.

3. “Guardians of the Galaxy”

“Guardians of the Galaxy” is a remake of the Marvel comics, of course there are some differences, but it sticks with the original concept for the most part.

After he steals a mysterious orb, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), in the far reaches of outer space, becomes the main target of a manhunt led by Ronan the Accuser, and Quill creates a team known as the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ to save the world.

Before I watched the film, I did a little bit of background research about the comics, here.

Some of the stars in the film include: Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.

Surprisingly, the soundtrack for the film is diverse and has songs from David Bowie and the Raspberries.

4. “22 Jump Street”

After going back to high school in “21 Jump Street,” Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) now go to college for another undercover operation. Not only do they have to crack the code for a new drug, “WhyPhy,” they also have to learn how to work together all over again.

Tatum and Hill are joined by Dave Franco, Rob Riggle and Ice Cube, as well as new cast members, Amber Stevens and Wyatt Russell.

There is even a fun t-shirt featured in the film that might relate to Texas Tech students.

5. “Maleficent”

In a new take on an old classic, Angelina Jolie plays Maleficent, a fairy who lives in a peaceful forest and who falls in love with a human boy. When the boy is grown, in order to become king, he betrays Maleficent’s trust. 16 years later, the king’s daughter, Aurora (Elle Fanning), is destined to fulfill the curse that was given to her by Maleficent all those years ago.

Other cast members include: Sharlto Copley, Ella Purnell and Sam Riley.

Lana Del Rey did a cover of a song from the original film, “Once Upon A Dream.”
