Lubbock’s Halloween Celebrations

If you’re stuck on how to celebrate Halloween this year, don’t worry! Texas Tech and the city of Lubbock have plenty of festive events going on this week.

Kalf Fry

This year, everyone’s favorite country music concert (and place to eat deep-fried cow testicles) falls on a holiday. The lineup includes headliners Turnpike Troubadours with Whiskey Myers and Dirty River Boys. Even though it’s not a specified Halloween event, a little spirit and some costumes will not be discouraged. Tickets are $25.

Haunted Houses

Nightmare on 19th is West Texas’ only Halloween theme park and is open until Nov. 1. Admission is $20 to visit the four terrifying haunted house attractions that the theme park offers, but it’s not the only place to get a scare. Hall of Horrors, held at the Trader’s Market, features over 20,000 square feet of haunted houses. Their three attractions include an insane asylum, carnival, and zombie themed haunted house, for $19 admission. You could try to choose between the two spooky theme parks, or visit both! (If you can handle it.)

Fox 34 Halloween Bash

Fox 34 is hosting its first ever Halloween Bash at the Cactus Theater on Thursday and Friday nights at 8 p.m. The concert will feature Halloween songs like “Thriller” and the original 1974 version of the horrifying classic “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Adding to the fun, a special cocktail made just for the night called the Monster Margarita will be served throughout the event.

Dia de los Muertos Procession

If costumes and candy aren’t your things, try celebrating one of the most important holidays in Mexico. The Day of the Dead, or Dia de l0s Muertos, is to honor and celebrate the dead, and a huge part of the holiday is its signature artwork characterized by cartoonish skeletons with intricate designs and a range of bright colors. The third annual Dia de los Muertos procesion will be hosted by the International Cultural Center this Friday at 5:30 p.m on Halloween night at multiple venues. The International Cultural Center and the Buddy Holly Center will both host large exhibits of themed artwork, The School of Art is hosting a similar exhibit, but graphic design based, and a celebration featuring music, art, food, and dance will be held at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts. The events last until 9 p.m, leaving enough time to make an appearance at a Halloween party.

Jekyll & Hyde production

Following four successful years on Broadway, this classic, dark story returns to the stage, and this Friday and Saturday, it’ll be in Lubbock. The shows will be held at the Civic Center Theatre at 7:30 p.m Friday, and at 2 p.m and 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be found at selectaseatlubbock.com.

NRHC Heritage Halloween

The National Ranching Heritage Center will be hosting its seventh annual old-fashioned Halloween event. This year there will be a harvest festival while trick-or-treaters visit historic buildings and fill their bags up with period-themed candy. A store will also be open to customers looking for decorations and fall gifts and merchandise.
