A suspect was apprehended by Texas Tech Police Wednesday, ten days after a sexual assault occurred near the west side of Coleman Hall – 1800 block of Flint Avenue, according to a Clery Act Crime Alert Notification.

TTPD jointly executed a search warrant off-campus with the Lubbock Police Department, leading to the arrest of 17-year-old Dominic Rodriguez for the Dec. 8 assault.

Rodriguez had been arrested previously in July for burglarizing a vehicle in the 500 block of North Dover Avenue, according to the warrant. Rodriguez has not been convicted of the vehicle burglary and was released from jail on Dec. 3 after posting $1000 bond.

It is unclear if Rodriguez is the perpetrator of a second on-campus assault that occurred on Dec. 9 in the Wall/Gates Hall parking lot located near the 2800 block of 18th Street. According to a university email notification, a woman reported to police that a Hispanic male, described as being six-feet tall and weighing 140 pounds, attempted to assault her.

Regarding the two incidents, Texas Tech University officials released the following statement:

“Texas Tech Police are conducting investigations into both incidents. It’s uncertain at this time if the two are related. Texas Tech Police and Lubbock Police Department have an increased patrol presence around campus. Texas Tech encourages the campus community to be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious behavior by calling 911.”
