Tuning into Tech Sports Media

For fans of sports, there are countless places to go for sports coverage, news and commentary. But, often times, people do not realize how many outlets on campus fill this need. From the latest topics in the mainstream sports media to the lesser known sports organizations on campus, these outlets bring it all.

Here are just a few of them:

KTXT The Raider 88.1 – “In the Paint” with Derrick Holland

When does it air? – 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.

For Derrick Holland, a doctoral student in Texas Tech University’s College of Media and Communication, In the Paint is his first solo, themed show on the radio.

He said the show is centered around basketball and the NBA is his bread and butter. Usually, when he brings a guest on the show, the first order of business is finding out what team they root for in the NBA.

“We hit the main headlines, but we’ll also hit very specific headlines per, you know, whatever niche we want to pursue,” Holland said. “Big headlines, like when Boogie Cousins got traded, of course we talked that.”

While the NBA is his favorite professional sports league, he tries to bring a diverse array of guests who have unique backgrounds and knowledge on any sports topic.

He recently had Texas Tech men’s rugby coach, Phil Terrigno, on the show to discuss all things rugby for the first segment of the three segment show. He said this is a unique subject area in sports that his listeners may not know very much about.

As for the feel of the show, he said he likes to keep it light and fun, geared for everyone, but particularly college aged people. He said he likes to have good music and crack jokes.

“Maybe if they cut work early and go have one of those adult beverages and turn me on, it’s not super serious to where, you know, it kind of can distract them from having a good time or having a good Friday,” Holland said. “But, at the same time it can get their wheels turning in terms of sports.”

Stafford said he and Ingle met after he had been doing the MCTV sports updates. He said they hit it off right away and decided to give this show a go.

As for the show format, Stafford said it is comprised of different segments based around whatever news is out in the sports world, but they always do at least one segment every show about the latest news in Texas Tech sports.

He emphasized they really like to talk about any sport, but they often keep the content topical. And while they talk about box scores and predictions, Stafford explained he and Ingle tackle deeper topics as well and the show is not just a basic sports show.

“We dive into issues, it’s not just about the stats and stuff, we just kind of go into any big news in sports,” Stafford said. “If there’s an issue, we will dive into it.”

Stafford thinks being a fellow student gives them a unique way to connect to their audience because it is always good to have opinions from different perspectives.

“We both like what we do and we have fun on the show,” Stafford said. “I think we have pretty good entertainment from time to time, especially when we get heated in an argument.”

“Raider Report” with Spencer Grzywacz

Where can you find it? – Youtube channel Raider Report TTU

Raider Report is a show that has been produced and hosted by Spencer Grzywacz and crew for the last few years. It is continuing on strong and promises to bring fun, laughs and thought.

Grzywacz said if you take some Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, combine it with some Live with Kelly and Michael, then sprinkle in some sports, you basically have Raider Report.

As for the content, he said they cover sports all over Texas Tech’s campus and sometimes the lesser-known sports.

“The thing is, we try to target the more obscure sports and organizations,” Grzywacz said. “Everybody knows about football, baseball, basketball. And our goal is to really kind of hit on the low key stuff.”

The show usually starts with an icebreaker game. When he did a show with the Texas Tech Quidditch team, they started with Harry Potter trivia. But, after that, he said they move into a more interview type of segment where they really get to ask questions of the guest and find out more about them as well as their organization.

Finally, he said they usually wrap it up with a more general segment about what is going on with Texas Tech sports.

“If you want have a good laugh and entertainment while also learning a little something about Texas Tech and sports organizations,” Grzywacz said. “Our show is the show to come and watch.”

Brett Brown, senior producer for the Double T Insider, said this show has grown from a humble Youtube show to having air time on Fox Sports Southwest after people started recognizing the talent and work these students were putting into it.

Brown said the show is supposed to have a magazine feel to it and is really trying to give the inside scoop about Texas Tech athletics to the viewer.

“Throughout the week we sit down with players and coaches and get different interviews with them,” Brown said. “Most of the time they’re are stories along the lines of student athletes and how they are excelling in the classroom.”

But, Brown emphasized there are several different segments that they do on the show and some are weekly segments while others are reoccurring, just not every week. He said they try to stay very topical and keep it fresh. So, if it is football season, you will see a lot about that, but if it is baseball season, you will hear more about that.

If you are Texas Tech fan, Brown said this is the show for you because they move past just game recaps and box scores which he believes is much more compelling content than those typical headlines.

“It’s not just telling you about what happened this past weekend during the game,” Brown said. “It’s telling you about who these players are, it’s telling you the stories behind how they got to where they are and why it is that they do what they do for Texas Tech.”
