Garth Loved Trisha: Strong Relationship, Strong Tour

Though he has seen her perform on this tour over 300 times, country singer Garth Brooks said one performance of wife and fellow singer Trisha Yearwood blows him away each time. Even talking about it choked him up.

“Just talking about it now kills me,” Brooks said. “It’s one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever see when it comes to music.”

Though he did not say what song it is that does him in, the love between the two musicians was apparent during a press conference on Thursday, before the couple began a five-show stop in Lubbock.

The Garth Brooks World Tour has been on the road for almost three years, and Brooks said he thought the Texas leg of the tour was done months ago. When he found out that his team scheduled shows in Lubbock, he said he was excited to return to friendly territory. The last time Brooks performed in Lubbock was at the 1991 Pike Fest.

“It’s like Disneyland for country artists to come here and play,” Brooks said.

When Brooks decided to return to performing after a 10-plus year hiatus, which he used to spend time with his daughters, he said he had his family’s support. Yearwood toured at the beginning of their marriage, and said she knew the time apart can be difficult, so she decided to join him on this adventure.

“We made a decision when we got married, it’ll be 12 years this year, that we wanted to be together,” Yearwood said. “We didn’t want to be together to be apart.”

Touring together is no different than being at home, Brooks said. The couple enjoys wherever they are, as long as they are there together.

“Wherever this woman is, that’s where I want to be. I don’t care if I like where we’re at or not,” Brooks said. “As long as I’m with her, then I’ll be fine.”

Brooks said later in the press conference that he simply likes being with Yearwood. He said he is perfectly content when Yearwood is binge watching shows like “Bloodline” and he is looking up tractor parts. As long as they are together, he said he is happy.

The couple’s passion for performing was also evident during the press conference. Yearwood said Brooks gives each concert his best effort, never giving a second-rate performance from one night to the next.

Concert goers can expect this weekend’s performances to be energetic, Yearwood said. She said she thinks of the attendees who have not seen the couple perform, and remembers that every fan deserves her best performance. Brooks concurred and said fans notice when artists are not giving a performance their all.

“You’re walking down the hall, trying to get your second wind, your feet are hurting, everything hurts,” Brooks said. “And then that crowd goes up, and then all of a sudden, you become 5 years old again. And then here we go!”

Brooks and Yearwood will perform nightly at the United Supermarkets Arena from Thursday through Sunday, with a bonus afternoon show on Saturday. Tickets are still available for each performance and can be purchased online.
