Eating Around The World: Lubbock Style

Those who have not visited Lubbock tend to sell it short. While many think Lubbock is only flat lands and tumble weeds, it actually has a lot to offer, especially when it comes to food.

The restaurants featured in this article will help you satisfy any cravings, no matter what culture they come from.

American

If you are looking for a gourmet burger, Twisted Root Burger Co.  is the answer. They offer a wide variety of burgers, each with their own unique “twist.”

The two most popular burgers are The Western and Freshman 15The Western is piled high with pepper jack cheese, bacon, fried onion strings & jalapeños. Smashed fries, melted cheddar cheese, fried egg & bacon make up the Freshman 15.

The quality does not end with their burgers, Twisted Root Burger Co. makes tasty hand-spun custard shakes.

“In my opinion, Twisted Root has the best shakes in Lubbock,” says Texas Tech student Chris Farhat. If you are feeling adventurous, be sure to try one of their Adult Shakes which are served with alcohol.

Want a good quality burger, but on a college budget? Christakis Burgers is just the place. With the family feel Christakis offers, everyone is welcomed. The food is delicious and a great price, you will not find a meal that is over $10.

They offer anything from burgers to chicken fried steak. If you are in the mood for a sweet treat, finish your meal with a piece of cake that is homemade fresh daily.

Blue Sky Texas is the student stop for burgers, shakes, and more. According to their website, Blue Sky Texas has been voted “Best Burger Since 2003” by Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. The most popular item on the menu is no doubt their cheese burger, made with fresh ingredients and 80/20 chuck beef. Blue Sky also has a great happy hour. All day Saturday you can get their delicious margaritas for only $3.50 or domestic pitchers for $9.

serves it just right! BushHog’s  is the perfect place to get your BBQ fix. BushHog’s is great for any day of the week.

Whether it be washer Wednesday, open mike night Thursday, or the live music played on Friday and Saturday, you (and your pets) are sure to enjoy this unique dining experience.

“BushHog’s is a really cool place, very hip and affordable,” says Texas Tech student Kelli Kemp.

According to manger Jackie Opperman, the two most popular items on the menu are the queso brisket fries and the BushHog burger and although BushHog’s does not offer a happy hour, they are BYOB. So pick up your beverage of choice and swing by BushHog’s for a Lubbock original.

Italian

Another great spot for BYOB in lubbock is Italian Garden. Located in the downtown area, Italian Garden’s tuscan charm and intimate setting intrigues all guests. The atmosphere is not the only thing guests love.  Their fresh garlic rolls and incredible pasta are some of the best in Lubbock.

Owner Matt Brati says, “almost everyone loves our rolls.”

Italian garden is known for their homemade “pink sauce” which is a combination of alfredo and tomato sauce. The “pink sauce” is served on their two most popular dishes, the Chicken Ala Casa and Tortellini Alla Rosa. A review from TripAdvisor reads, “this place never disappoints.”

Mexican

Lubbock has many great restaurants, but their Mexican restaurants are by far some of the best. Ruby Tequila’s is home to refreshing margaritas, sizzling fajitas, and mouthwatering queso.

For the month of March, they will have “March Mania” drink specials. According to general manager Andrew Purdy, the most popular drink is their margaritas. While their margaritas are definitely a customer favorite, Ruby’s fajitas are also a top menu item.

Ruby Tequila’s has  two locations in Lubbock, one location being directly across from the stadium. During football season Ruby’s is packed with Red Raiders, making this location the perfect stop on game day.

If you are in the mood for more of an authentic Mexican flare, Las Raspados Colimas is just the place. With a 4.8 rating on Yelp, you will not be disappointed.

They are closed Monday through Wednesday and open Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 9 p.m. Although their hours are not the most ideal, they make up for it by selling tacos for a $1.50 on weekends.

“I wouldn’t go anywhere else to get tacos,” explains Texas Tech student Elisa Aponte.

The menu does not stop at tacos, they offer a variety of Mexican specialities. Corn cups and their extravagant fruit drinks are customer favorites. Next time you want to experience a little bit of Mexico take a trip to Las Raspados Colimas.

Thai

Thai Pepper offers offers authentic Thai food. Thai Pepper is one of Kliff Kingsbury’s go-to places and that should be enough of a reason to check it out. Although the seating in the building is a little compact, the great service and food make up for it.

The most popular items on are the menu are Pad Thai and Kool Special. For spicy food lovers I recommend getting the Pad Thai, it is packed with flavor and each bite leaves your more satisfied than the last.

Located right by the hospital and across from campus, Thai Pepper brings in customers of all ages.

Japanese

As college students, it is hard to treat ourselves to nice dinners. Sushi and hibachi are finer foods and cost a little more money. However, with Ohana’s sushi happy hour, you do not have to worry about breaking the bank.

Ohana offers  happy hour Sunday-Thursday from 5-9pm. The California roll, crunchy crab, spicy tuna, and happy shrimp are all offered as apart of the happy hour special. Each roll comes with 4 pieces.

The happy hour specials do not stop there, Ohana also offers kick-ass drink specials. $1.50 drafts from 5-9 pm, on Fridays treat yourself to $5 martinis, and on Saturday enjoy half off saki and hot saki.
