Tarot Readers Provide Spiritual Guidance

By Haley Davis

Though tarot reading originated on the streets of 14th century Western Europe, this alternative form of spirituality has become an outlet for individuals in the Lubbock community.

Modern tarot card decks evolved from European game cards referred to as Mamluk, a game utilized for playful divination in which players were dealt predictive cards representing their individual destinies, according to the Stanford Collector’s Weekly.

Mojo the Tarot Reader is an active member of the spiritualist community in Lubbock and found interest in the practice of tarot reading from his grandmother in the 1960s.

“My grandmother was a Christian, but she believed that there was something about the spirit world that was really active,” Mojo said. “She believed that if people could become in tune with that, they could find different ways to communicate.”

Since those childhood years, Mojo said people in need of spiritual guidance seem to find him through word-of-mouth.

“I do it as often as I’m needed,” Mojo said. “Readings do something human beings have lost touch with by creating a sacred space between individuals; experiencing connection face to face in real time.”

Mojo has offered tarot readings for the last three years at the First Friday Art Trail held in downtown Lubbock.

The First Friday Art Trail is a free, self-guided public art exhibition that brings together collectors, artists and the Lubbock community the first Friday of every month, according to the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts.

“These readings allow an individual to stop and see the energy that’s happening around them at that particular time,” Mojo said. “The seeker then has the opportunity to act on that energy or react. In the end, it’s about how that individual chooses to interpret the message that the spirit has for them at that moment.”

Sixty-nine percent of women and 39 percent of men in the U.S. admit to having contacted a tarot reader/psychic for spiritual guidance in their lifetime, according to the American Federation of Certified Psychics and Mediums.

Mojo said he provides three card readings, each representing past, present, and future, at a setting like the First Friday Art Trail, but for individuals seeking a more in-depth reading, he provides full ten cards sessions.

The ten cards pulled from the deck represent: the general atmosphere, obstacles, spiritual foundation, the past, the energy in which an individual draws the most strength, the future, fears, the influence of family/friends, subjective/objective, and lastly, the final outcome.

Robin Brown, a pre-nursing junior, received a three-card reading at the First Friday Art Trail last month.

“I’ve only had one other tarot reading in my life, but Mojo absolutely blew me away,” Brown said. “He was so genuine and his interpretation of my different cards was spot on with what was going on in my life at the time.”

Robin said she is a Christian, but that this type of alternative spirituality has a lot to offer.

“I think it would be naïve to assume that tarot reading is all fantasy,” Brown said. “I think that if your open-minded to what it can provide for you, you gain more from it.”

Sherry Scott is a practicing healer and holistic professional in Lubbock that offers tarot readings to her clients as well as reiki, crystal reiki, bodywork, and spiritual guidance.

“A tarot reading should only affirm what you already know deep down and the information should absolutely resonate in your very core,” Scott said. “True guidance that one can rely on for life’s decisions should come from within.”

Scott also attended the University of Metaphysics in Sedona, Arizona where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in metaphysics. She is currently working on a master’s degree, and plans on pursuing the doctorate program.

“Sometimes you get insights from the tarot that you truly did not know or foresee, but when you hear the truth, you can feel it,” Scott said. “The tarot is simply a baseline, a look into where you are right now and as we utilize our free will, we know we have the power to change the future.”
