Chatting in the Chimy’s Line: Budgeting

By Blaine Hill and Justin Rex

If you have ever sipped on a Chimy’s margarita or tasted its queso cheese fries, then you know why there is usually a line wrapped around the corner of the building at night.

According to Villanova University Student Life, a national average of 80 percent of college students drink alcohol. College students on average spend $900 a year on alcohol, according to the University of Pennsylvania.

In Lubbock, 30 percent of the city’s population attends college, according to the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance. So, if the figure from Villanova University Student Life is accurate, there could be roughly 28,000 students at Texas Tech that consume some alcohol.

Let’s do the math. If the 28,000 students who statistically drink at Texas Tech spent $900 a year on alcohol, they would contribute over $2.5 million to the alcohol sales industry.

We did not talk to the whole 28,000 about drinking habits, but we did ask some people in the Chimy’s line. Check out our first installment of “Chatting in the Chimy’s Line”!
