Humans of The Farmers Market

“I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important.” – The Eleventh Doctor, Doctor Who

Humans of New York is a simple concept. Photographer Brandon Stanton takes a picture of someone, usually on the streets of New York City. He then interviews them to get insight into their unique, complex lives. It has attracted a huge following on social media, with almost 18 million likes on Facebook. That is where the idea for this series comes from, which tells stories of the humans of Lubbock.

The Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market is held every Saturday through Oct. 15 on Buddy Holly Avenue. The market offers an opportunity for consumers to meet the people who sell homegrown and homemade goods.

“I’m a nurse,” Deb Hendley said.  “I am a runner and I am very interested in good health. I also love sweets. So, I kind of designed this company and it started out for myself just to get good quality baked goods that are still good for you. Everything is 100 percent vegan and I have gluten free options. I try to make everything as yummy and as nutritional as I can.”

“I really don’t make any money, I kind of break even sometimes, but I do it because when people up and go, ‘Oh my gosh, everything here is vegan. I can eat everything.’ I know how that feels, especially in this area there’s not a lot of options for vegans and gluten-free.”

“You know, there’s nothing wrong with a brownie like I make every once in awhile. I wouldn’t recommend eating them all day, every day, but they are certainly way better than conventional baked goods and anything you can buy in the store.”

“I teach at Lubbock Christian University and my son owns Blue Sky Kennels, and there’s an acre out back,” Darrell Price said.  “So, we decided that we would plant garlic together and just see what it would be. We’ve enjoyed being together. It’s really labor intensive. That’s why you don’t see people planting garlic in much capacity.”

“It’s all a labor of love,” Charity Farthing said.  “I have a two-year-old and I want to work from home. And, I love plants. Do what you love. I’ve had so many jobs, and this is the happiest I’ve ever been. I think you really have to be passionate about what you do to thrive.”

“Before this, I worked in medical aesthetics and I sold Botox and derma fillers. I know, such a drastic change.”

“Oh yeah, this is my life goal. I’m going to open a shop, and it’s going to be part boutique and then I’m going to do event planning. I’ll have a greenhouse and I’m going to grow all of my stuff. When my daughter gets a little older I can bring her to work. You know, I don’t want to be without her. She’s my whole life and it makes a difference.”
