Lubbock’s restaurant industry is on the upswing, especially in the area of Milwaukee Avenue, bringing up property values in the city.
Tech student Kemia Carter is ecstatic about the upcoming grand opening of Saltgrass, which she frequents back home. The Texas chain is known for its tender steaks, fresh fish and delicious appetizers, Carter couldn’t have been happier to know one is about to open at 6026 Marsha Sharp Freeway.
“I just love their food,” Carter said. “The service is always great, and you really get your money’s worth.”

Another restaurant that has gotten some buzz lately is Teddy Jack’s Hub City Grill at 7205 Milwaukee Ave.
The restaurant’s theme reflects the idea of Teddy Jack, a traveler and man of mystery. Pictures of people he encountered along his journey can be seen along the walls of the restaurant, which offers pastas, gourmet handcrafted burgers, Tex-Mex, and brick oven pizzas.
“We don’t do pretty little food,” said Thomas Tijerina, the general manager. “We serve big portions, with a colorful menu.”
And, of course, among college students, there has been much buzz about Insomnia Cookies on 19th street, next to the Varsity bookstore.
Originating in 2013 at the University of Pennsylvania, Insomnia Cookies got its start in a college dorm room. Since then, it has opened 85 stores nationwide, with Lubbock being the first Texas location. Insomnia Cookies delivers to houses, hotels, and even straight to your dorm room.
“Kids, families and students: we really have something for everyone, which is the best part about us,” said Tracie Kurtz, the store’s marketing manager.
