So You Think You Can Senior: Comfort Food

This is the first entry in Natalie Morales’s “So You Think You Can Senior” blog, about being a senior at Texas Tech.

My last semester of college just started, and I feel like my life is in shambles. Assignments, quizzes and papers are already piling up, and all I can think about is walking across the stage in that black, flowing gown, flaunting those Louboutins I want.

During my four years at Texas Tech, I have made a lot of tough decisions, typically ending with tears and late-night stops to Whataburger to cure my pain. Whataburger is the perfect mouth-watering comfort food. I know it is definitely my go-to, even though I typically just get a cheeseburger with ketchup and pickles only.

When people say “Freshman 15”, I now understand. We all have that go-to restaurant that serves just the right dish to make us feel better about that big test in Español, porque Español es muy dificil. Too bad Tex Mex can’t help me get by in class.

Chimy’s is one of my favorite comfort food spots. I mean, not only do they have great drinks, but their food is also amazing! Quesadillas and nachos are my favorite, especially paired with a margarita.

We all know we take any chance we get to have Chimy’s famous marg and those Dr Pepper Shootouts that just scream our names on the weekends. I think the longest I waited in line was an hour and a half, in 30-degree weather. All for two drinks before the last call.

Chimy’s is just pure heaven. I know other people agree, or there wouldn’t be that long line everyone dreads, but still waits in because it’s just that great. But, I’m still there, waiting along with everyone else, because nothing else comforts me better than quesadillas and a delicious marg after a stressful week of class.

And who doesn’t go to the Depot District without stopping by that little barbecue stand, Big E’s?! If you haven’t, you should definitely check it out, because I don’t think you can say you’ve really lived in Lubbock until you’ve eaten there. They are open super late, and barbecue definitely tastes better at 2 a.m.

If you can’t find it, just go outside and follow your nose. The aroma of delicious food will lead you right to it. The smell is absolutely enticing, and it’s the perfect food after leaving any club in the depot.

Pancake House is my go-to breakfast diner. Although they aren’t open 24 hours, like iHop, they are much much MUCH better.

I think I love the inside of the restaurant just as much as I love the food. The inside is so homey, and the staff really makes you feel like family. They also have loyalty punch cards, which is great when you’re a broke college student. Be sure to go early. I love their biscuits and gravy, but if I go too late in the afternoon, they run out. They close at 2:30 p.m. every day, so really, get your butt up and make it that way! I promise it will be worth it.

Happy eating!
