Failed It or Nailed It: Contouring

A contour is “the outline or outer edge of something,” says the Merriam-Webster dictionary. But what does this mean when talking about makeup? According to

According to Allure, modern-day contouring is “all about enhancing cheekbones, slimming your face, and tricking the eye in a believable way.” The earliest known use of the makeup technique was in the 1940s, when makeup artists tried to make actresses look more refined on the big screen, according to The Telegraph.

“It can completely reshape a face, from creating a slimmer nose to hiding a double chin … it’s closer to artwork than a simple daily base,” the Telegraph article read.Few people are makeup professionals. I personally stick to applying foundation, blush, mascara, eyeliner and a bold lip color.  Sometimes, I can even screw up even these basics. I will not try a winged eyeliner or a smoky eye because I would look like I have two black eyes.

Yet I couldn’t help but notice the contouring trend when Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, began using the technique. The style quickly took off, with over 1.7 million videos now on YouTube showing the makeup technique.

There are many ways to contour, depending on the shape of your face. I think some people take it too far, but the outcome usually looks good. Contouring should highlight your features and not change them. I have seen pictures where the person looks completely different afterward. But hey, to each her own.

I tried contouring my face, with the help of Quran Batiste, The Hub’s promotions and social media manager, and Adonika Quintela, a sophomore nutrition major. I was absolutely terrified. Here is how it went:
