15 College Students Give Their Best Advice

I’ve had the time of my life being a Red Raider. While in college, I’ve made friends, been through heartbreak and, of course, learned a lot.

There were times I wished I had advice to get through a sticky situation, a rough moment or even just through a normal day, from anyone else who had experienced these feelings.

Whether we get advice from a fellow student, professor, parent or adviser, there is always one piece of advice that sticks with you forever.

Here’s what 15 college students say is the best advice they’ve ever received:

  1. “No one in the world has or can have the same perspective as you. You are unique and you are important. Learn, discover and grow in as many ways as you can.” – Juliet Wallace, 19, dance and pre-med major and business minor
  2.  “It is beneficial for you to go to class because you are paying for it. If you think about, however many times you miss class, that’s how much money you’re wasting by not going to class.”  – Carissa Entis, 21, dance major
  3. “Know the people that are in [your] circle, your go-to people, it’s critical in college. Not only do these people have your back, but they become your friends for the rest of your life. Who knows, they could be a bridge in the future that will propel you forward in life.” – Norberto Gonzalez, 21, petroleum engineer major
  4. “Make sure you get involved. Ideally, join something with your major, but joining a club with other types of people teaches you a lot of things that you wouldn’t learn in a classroom.” – Laura Duclos, 21, journalism major
  5. “No one remembers the nights they got enough sleep.” – Haley Britzky, 21, journalism major
  6. Don’t burn bridges. You never know who you are going to need or want to keep up with later in life. Your freshman roommate might have driven you crazy, but when all hell breaks loose, you will realize they were a great listener or have resources that will really help you later.” -Alyssa Chrisope, 20, journalism major
  7. Don’t sweat the small stuff when it comes to grades. Yes, always try for an A. But if you’re in a class that you’re not good at don’t let that C get in your way!” – Hannah Miller, 21, dance major
  8. “Whatever you do in life, stay driven towards a goal, but always be open to new opportunities along the way. Be willing to let opportunity take you to new places and maybe a walk of life that you weren’t planning on before. All in all, stay driven and never stop being passionate.” – Kaitlyn Hopper, 21, dance major
  9. “If you actually go to class, you have won half the battle. And that’s from experience.” – Udeme “Michael” Afangideh, 20, advertising major
  10. “Pursue internships to explore your career choice. Academic classes and books can only teach you so much about a career. Doing it will allow you to come to the realization if what you think you want to do is what will make you feel a sense of importance, purpose and accomplishment for years to come.” – Nikkolina “Nikki” Chandler, 21, psychology major
  11. Don’t give up. No matter how hard it is or how many set backs you face, you have to stick with it.” – Stevi Caldwell, 24, corporate retail major
  12. “Many of Texas Tech’s degree programs focus on teaching theory rather than practical, applied knowledge. Create and seize every opportunity to learn outside of the classroom to ensure you are well-rounded and useful to any potential employer.” – Patrick McNeill, 25, journalism graduate
  13. “Use college to learn how to network because success in the real world is all about connections and who you know. Pursue a career that you enjoy and makes you happy.” -Preston Opara, 21, electronic media and communications major
  14. Mind over matter. Just because it goes to speak for facing adversity, overcoming stress, persevering through all the battles that occur in college. Having that strong-willed mindset will carry you as far as you will allow it to—as long as you have that ‘this, too, shall pass’ mindset.” -Dante’ Harpe, 21, math major
  15. “Keep moving forward. No matter how hard the class is or how difficult life is being. Always fight to move forward.” -Hayward Johnson, 23, psychology major
