Painting Made Easy for Everyone

By Abby Aldrich and Preston Derrick

Painting with a Twist allows Lubbock residents to take a break from their daily lives and make some art in the process.

Local artists lead customers through painting different works of art — including seasonal, Texas and animal designs.

Danielle Counts, an instructor at Painting with a Twist, said even if someone has never lifted a paintbrush, they still have the opportunity to create a work of art.

“We teach them how to do it step by step from drawing the item to mixing paint,” Counts said. “We do everything in layman terms, so you don’t have to feel like you have to be involved in art to be able to paint here.”

The studio provides each customer with a canvas with a pencil outline of the art, along with paint and brushes. Painters are allowed to bring drinks of their choice, including alcoholic beverages if they are of age.

“There’s not a whole lot of places like this,” Counts said. “It is kind of a BYOB place so they can kind of relax. It’s not the same old every day go to the movies and eat dinner type of thing.”

Sara Rogers, who attended the class with her husband to try something different, said the studio serves as a creative outlet.

“It’s like a stress reliever, but it also expresses that creativity,” Rogers said. “No matter how little you have, everybody has some sort of creativity, and painting just brings it out in them, even if you are just as bad at stick figures as I am.”

Customers can reserve spots online, by phone or by email. Painting with a Twist offers private, birthday, bachelorette and bridal parties, as well as team-building exercises. The studio is located at 6816 Slide Road.

Said Count: “It’s two hours of laughing and fun and kind of finding maybe a creative side that they didn’t have.”
