The Texas Tech chapter of the American Meteorological Society is holding a food drive in collaboration with the South Plains Food Bank through Dec. 12 in the College of Media & Communication building.
The chapter’s goal is to collect 650 pounds of food, said Timothy Sliwinski, a doctoral candidate and the group’s treasurer, in an email to The Hub@TTU.
To make donating convenient, Sliwinski said, the chapter placed a collection barrel on the first floor, near the main elevators in the office tower. More collection barrels can be found on the 11th and 12th floors, outside the elevators.
Sliwinski suggested the following donations based on the SPFB’s list of “Most Wanted Food Items”:
- Canned evaporated milk (not sweetened)
- Canned fish or poultry (in water)
- Canned or dried beans
- Macaroni and cheese
- Whole-wheat grains or pasta
- Canned fruits and vegetables (reduced sodium or reduced sugar/no added salt/or packaged without heavy syrup)
Donations should not be contained in glass containers, including baby food jars.
Aaron Hill, member and former president of the AMS chapter, said this is the third year the group has teamed up with the food bank to hold the drive.
“It would be very easy to get caught up in just reaching our pound goal,” Hill said. “But in reality, we know that any donations we are able to gather are going to help those in need, and that alone makes this small, simple collection a success.”
