SGA Initiatives, Holton Westbrook: Giving Back to Students

Holton Westbrook really likes alliteration. As a Texas Tech University Student Government Association presidential candidate, Westbrook has five main goals: scholarship, service, school spirit, safety and structure.

Westbrook, a member of the candidate bloc Techsan Tradition, said his ultimate goal as student body president, if elected, would be to give back to the students as much as he could.

Westbrook said he may not have been able to come to Texas Tech without scholarships. He would like SGA to provide scholarships, so more students would be able to attend Texas Tech and have the same opportunities he had.

“That allows us as students to give back in a more materialistic and financial way,” Westbrook said. “And, that’s a great, great asset I think we gain easily within this next year. Creating an endowment fund for those students to apply for these scholarships is the way to do that.”

Westbrook also wants to encourage students to give back in other ways. He said he would like to initiate more community service opportunities for students to get involved both on the Texas Tech campus and in the Lubbock community.

For Westbrook, school spirit means not only being proud of where you go to school but also representing the university as well as you can. He said students should be as proud to be a Red Raider when they are studying for an exam on a Wednesday night as when they are cheering on Kliff Kingsbury and the football team on a Saturday afternoon.

As a member of the Greek Life Task Force, Westbrook learned safety is a big concern at Texas Tech. He said being on the task force taught him many things about the process of initiating change.

“To be able to see what the process is, what we’re trying to do, what we’re trying to build on, will be very crucial in the future,” Westbrook said.

Westbrook would also like to raise awareness of SGA in general. He said being transparent about its structure and motives will help students realize SGA members are there to help.

“Having the students truly understand our transparency, and understanding who we are and what we represent,” Westbrook said, “and being able to show that in all that we do with an organized structure, is very important.”
