Tech’s International Film Series Opening Week

The Texas Tech International Film Series will begin its Spring 2015 season Tuesday night with a showing of “La Strada,” a 1954 Italian drama directed by cinema master Federico Fellini.

IFS coordinator Robert Peaslee said in an email that the first film will be shown tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, located at 120 West Loop 289. According to the Alamo Drafthouse website, tickets to this showing are free, but you can reserve a seat by buying a $5 food and beverage voucher.

This semester, the International Film Series — sponsored by the Texas Tech University College of Media & Communication’s  journalism and electronic media & communications department and the Thomas Jay Harris Institute for Hispanic and International Communication — will present a Fellini retrospective series.

Peter Bondanella — a Fellini scholar and a distinguished professor emeritus of Italian, comparative literature and film studies at Indiana University — will be at the showing. According to the press release, Bondanella, Ph.D., will also present a lecture on “Fellini and Fantasy: The Making of an Auteur” tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Qualia Room of the foreign languages building. The lecture is free and open to anyone.

Peaslee, Ph.D., said IFS and Alamo Drafthouse are partnering to present “Force Majeure” on Thursday, Jan. 29,  which is free for all students and educators with a valid identification form.

According to the IFS Tumblr, the Fellini series will continue throughout the semester. The next film showing is “Nights of Cabiria,” which will screen Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at Alamo Drafthouse. On March 24 at 7 p.m., the 1963 Fellini film, “8 1/2,” will be shown.

The final screening of the film series will take place on April 21 at 9 p.m. The Fellini film, “La Dolce Vita,” contains a series of stories following the week of a paparazzo journalist in Rome, Italy. All screenings are paired with speakers, panels or roundtables that offer the opportunity to have discussion raised by the Fellini films.

One $5 advance ticket can be exchanged for a $5 food or beverage voucher, good for use inside the Alamo Drafthouse. Seating for all International Film Series screenings is available on the Alamo Drafthouse website.
