Screen Actors Guild Awards: Recap

The Screen Actors Guild Awards is the one night each year where actors get to dress up and celebrate their peers, actors in both television and film. The 21st annual award ceremony took place last night, and it did not disappoint with plenty of stunning red carpet looks and surprising wins.

Hollywood’s finest sported gowns by some of fashion’s most renowned designers last night on the SAG Awards’ red carpet. Nominee Jennifer Aniston wowed in a black lace, vintage Galiano with a deep-plunging V-neck line, and Emma Stone took a spin on the menswear trend with a Dior design featuring a low-cut, tuxedo-inspired top with pockets and a luxurious long chiffon trail.

One of the night’s winners, Julianne Moore, who won outstanding performance by a female actor in a lead role for her performance in “Still Alice,” was another red carpet favorite in a emerald green color that really complimented her fair skin. The gown, by Givenchy, also had jeweled accents trailing down it, adding a lot of sparkle. Emerald seemed to be a trend last night; nominees Claire Danes and Patricia Arquette rocked the same color and looked fabulous doing it.

Patricia Arquette was also a big winner of the night. She took a statue home for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role for her 12-year-long work in “Boyhood.” J.K. Simmons won for male actor in a supporting role, making this his second award for his role in “Whiplash” after the Golden Globes.

There were some especially surprising wins at the SAG Awards with a few underdogs taking home statues.”Birdman” won for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, the biggest award of the night. The quirky film was up against “Boyhood,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything” — its same competitors for the Oscars, excluding “American Sniper,” “Whiplash,”and “Selma.”

Eddie Redmayne, the star of “The Theory of Everything,” got his first SAG award win for his moving performance as Stephen Hawking, who became a famed physicist despite his crippling motor neuron disease. Redmayne is also up for an Academy Award in the same category, but he has been said to be one of the biggest underdogs of the nominees.

In terms of television, the Netflix original programs might have had the best night. “Orange is the New Black” won for outstanding performance by an ensemble cast in a comedy series, and Uzo Aduba, who plays “Crazy Eyes” in the show, won for performance by a female actor in a comedy series against some of the biggest names in comedy: Julie Bowen, Amy Poehler, Edie Falco and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Kevin Spacey also took home an award for performance by a male actor for the Netflix show, “House of Cards,” a well-deserved win, in my opinion.

The Academy Awards will be Hollywood’s next award show, airing on Feb. 22. Tune in to see if any more of your favorite actors take home a trophy!
