The Hub Receives National Recognition for Outstanding Multimedia Stories

The staff at The Hub@TTU are pleased they are one of the smallest and youngest student-run media publications to gain national attention from the Associated Collegiate Press. ACP recently announced the Online Pacemaker and Story of the Year finalists.

Of the many awards offered, The Hub qualified as a finalist to win two individual awards in the prestigious 2014 Multimedia Story of the Year competition, which falls under the Pacemaker CompetitionIn the news story category, The Hub@TTU placed with “ICYMI: Executive Candidate Forum and Election Coverage” by Alicia Keene, graduate executive director for The Hub, and staff members Abbie Arroyos, Evan Dixon, Ben Jarvis, Blake Silverthorn and J.B. Felipe.  The Hub@TTU also placed in the feature story category with “ICYMI: The Hub’s Conversation With A Congressman” by Alicia Keene, Abbie Arroyos and Evan Dixon.

The Story of the Year finalists represent the nine best stories in each category from a competitive pool of publications around the United States.

The Associated College Press is the oldest and largest national membership organization for college student journalists. More than 20,000 students are staffers at ACP member publications. Since 1921, ACP has offered member resources to help improve their newspaper, magazine, yearbook, broadcast and online publications. The ACP claims the Pacemaker Competition is the oldest and most prestigious prize in college journalism, identifying the most generally excellent publications in the U.S. Many unofficially identify the award as the “Pulitzer Prize” equivalent of college journalism. The Hub@TTU did not enter the publication as a whole for this competition.

ACP and College Media Association offer an exhaustive convention program for college media staffs and their advisers, managers and faculty from public and private four-year and two-year colleges and universities. CMA Pinnacle Awards and ACP Pacemaker Awards, which includes the 2014 Multimedia Story of the Year award, will be announced at the ACP/CMA Fall National College Media Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 1. — “the largest convention of its kind in the world.” This convention celebrates life, liberty and the pursuit of media. The convention consists of 325 practical and professional learning sessions, high-profile keynotes, hands-on workshops, media critiques, special events, and trade show and awards ceremonies.

What is CMA?

College Media Association represents the people who advise the nation’s collegiate media newspapers, yearbooks, magazines and electronic media. Founded in 1954 as the National Council of College Publications Advisers, CMA now has more than 800 members from coast to coast. It supports both new and veteran advisers of collegiate media programs with conventions, workshops, publications and national networking. CMA members maintain strong lines of communication through print and electronic media. CMA’s website and social media outlets inform members of trends and news. College Media Review, its flagship journal, is the leading academic journal on advising collegiate media, both print and electronic. CMA offers its own awards, the Pinnacle Awards and Apple Awards, which The Hub@TTU did not enter.

The Double T Insider was also recognized as a finalist for one of its stories in the Story of the Year awards in the multimedia sports category. The Daily Toreador has one finalist in the photography category.

Several College of Media and Communication students recently were finalists in the South Central Regional Competition from the South Central Broadcasting Society: Congratulations to Alicia Keene, Evan Dixon and Abbie Arroyos for their honorable mentions in the game show or entertainment program category. Emily Pellegrini, Patrick McNeil and Erin Willis were finalists in the news feature package category.
