Tech SGA Pledges To Stop Sexual Assault

It’s on us — the Texas Tech University community — to stop sexual assault on our campus.

This is the new campaign that the Student Government Association is promoting. Tech SGA is one of the many groups across the nation joining the “It’s On Us” initiative launched by President Obama last month. The nationwide campaign was started in an effort to end sexual assault on college campuses.

“I like the fact that the White House has tailored this campaign to campuses,” Tech SGA President Hayden Hatch said in an email.  “The message is clear and simple,  I believe this will make it effective.”

Like many other campaigns, “It’s On Us” asks us to make a pledge: to recognize that non-consentual sex is sexual assault, to identify situations in which an assault may occur, to intervene in these situations, and to create a safe environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported.

As seen in the video by Caleb Fisher that was posted on the SGA’s Facebook page, Tech’s SGA members have officially taken the pledge and urge Tech students to do so as well.

“If the Tech community embraces the motto, ‘It’s On Us,'” Hatch said, “this place will become safer for all students.”

This campaign follows a recent, controversial event involving a fraternity on campus.

“The SGA joined the It’s On Us campaign,” Hatch said, “in an attempt to promote bystander intervention and increase student safety in the Texas Tech community.”

He said feedback showed students were primarily concerned with the lack of campus lighting and student safety education.

“The SGA will continue to promote the It’s On Us campaign,” Hatch said, “as well as advocate for increased lighting and education regarding sexual assault and student safety.
