ICYMI: Farewell To The Hancellor

In our four-part series, reporter Evan Dixon sat down with Chancellor Kent Hance to discuss everything from his years as a student at Texas Tech to the Mike Leach controversy. There was a new installment to our series, “Farewell To The Hancellor,” every Friday in June. In case you missed it, all of the installments have been collected below!

The Early Years

Originally from Dimmitt, Texas, Hance grew up as a farmer’s son. He said he enjoyed the agriculture life but knew it was not for him. In 1961, Hance’s parents dropped him off on the Tech campus, and he has loved it ever since.

Find out what Hance did for fun during college in our interview!

Time at Texas Tech, Part 1

Chancellor Kent Hance has been a Red Raider all his life. He extends that signature Raider hospitality to everyone he meets.

Hance’s wife, Susie, said her husband takes his job very seriously.

“He works, generally speaking, every day and that includes Saturday and Sunday till 11:30 or 12,” Susie said. “Then he goes to bed, and as you said, wakes up at about four, reads the paper, answers some e-mails. Then he’ll go back to sleep for maybe an hour or two, and then he wakes up.”

Besides being dedicated to his job, Susie said Hance is also dedicated to his students. She said Hance is always willing to visit a student in the hospital or help in any way he can.
