Farewell To The Hancellor : Time At Texas Tech, Part One

Chancellor Kent Hance has been a Red Raider all his life. He extends that signature Raider hospitality to everyone he meets.

As we learned in last week’s installment of “Farewell To The Hancellor,” Hance began his love affair with Tech when his parents dropped him off at Bledsoe Hall in 1961. In this week’s edition, The Hub@TTU reporter Evan Dixon reminisced about the first time he met Hance during his freshman year at Tech.

Hance’s wife, Susie, said her husband takes his job very seriously.

“He works, generally speaking, every day and that includes Saturday and Sunday till 11:30 or 12,” Susie said. “Then he goes to bed, and as you said, wakes up at about four, reads the paper, answers some e-mails. Then he’ll go back to sleep for maybe an hour or two, and then he wakes up.”

Besides being dedicated to his job, Susie said Hance is also dedicated to his students. She said Hance is always willing to visit a student in the hospital or help in any way he can.
