10 Things To Know: April 16

1. Sir Paul McCartney Wants To See Cotton Fields Forever

Hey Jude, and all Lubbockites for that matter, Texas Tech and the City of Lubbock announced this morning that Sir Paul McCartney will perform in the United Spirit Arena on June 14 — which happens to be Flag Day if anyone was wondering.

Apparently, Sir Paul’s people called event organizers at the USA and said Please Please Me. Sources said Sir Paul has always wanted to perform in Lubbock in the sky with haboobs because Buddy Holly, a Lubbockite, inspired much of The Beatles’ work.

Duane M. Nellis, Tech president, with a little help from his friends Chancellor Kent Hance and Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson, made the announcement on Wednesday at the Buddy Holly Center.

2. South Korean Ferry Sinking

A ferry with 459 souls on board, many of them teenagers on a trip with their high school, capsized in the Yellow Sea on Wednesday. The most recent count left more than 280 souls missing.

One passenger said that the crew told passengers to stay in their seats.

“I think that caused more loss of lives,” she said, through a translator.

3. The Veep Has An Instagram Account

Being for the benefit of all mankind, the White House unveiled Vice President Joe Biden’s Instagram account on Wednesday. If you’d like to see a day in the life of our nations’ second-most powerful political person simply search @VP. Click here to see VPJB’s first gram.

Here’s hoping that he will Instagram eight days a week.

4. They’re Letting Students See The Test

Once again life is getting easier for the next generation of college students. The College Board released sample questions from the new version of the SAT — which will hit desks in 2016. Among many other things, the board came together and voted to make the essay portion of the exam optional. Optional.

5. Not All Journalists Are As Amazing As Those Working At The Hub . . . Oh CNN

Help! You seriously have to check out what CNN put on its lower third Wednesday morning. The cable news channel clearly needs to reconsider whether information is breaking news or just history.

6. Ukraine

Unrest continues in the Eastern European country. This week a Russian jet made at least a dozen “low passes” over a U.S. destroyer stationed in the Black Sea.

7. Boston Strong

Ceremonies to remember the one-year anniversary of the bombings took place in Boston yesterday. Unfortunately, a man was arrested after walking down Boylston Street dressed in a long black veil and carrying a backpack with a rice cooker in it on Tuesday evening.

8. The Pope Just Got Cooler

While cruising St. Peter’s Square,  Pope Francis stopped and asked two fifth-graders to drive his car —  well in reality he just offered them a ride in the back seat. The three took a few laps around the square in the Pope’s very own yellow submarine waving to the crowd.

When a journalist asked the boys if they enjoyed hitchhiking on the Popemobile, one boy said “I feel fine,” according to no one.

9. Ford Mustang Turns 50

Ford began its celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Mustang on Wednesday. The company revealed it would make 1,964 special edition Mustangs —  honoring the year Ford first sold the muscle car. No word yet on when the special edition cars will take their first drive down Abbey Road.

10. Baseball

Yesterday, Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day — which was the 67th anniversary of the first game Robinson played. As the second baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Robinson broke the baseball color line as the first black man to play for a major league team in the modern era.

PS: Thank you to everyone who caught all of the Beatles references; we worked really hard on those.
