Mary Cram Is A Makeup Queen

Her weapon of choice is a foundation brush, a fresh tube of mascara and a heavy supply of MAC and Nars cosmetics. When she gets ready in the mornings, I don’t even want to know where her makeup regime falls compared to mine – especially on a school day.

Mary Cram, a senior public relations major from Arlington, Texas, is making a name for herself. The girl is gorgeous, and now she’s spilling her makeup secrets on how to steal her look. Beyonce might be the “Queen B” of music, but Cram is making her way up as the “majesty of makeup.”

Cram recently started her very own makeup tutorial YouTube Page. She has six videos right now, but said she is looking to only continue to produce videos in hopes to build up her subscribers views on her videos. Cram said the idea of creating her own YouTube channel started at a young age and only seemed to progress throughout the years.

“I was a dancer my whole life, so stage makeup was key,” she said. “I knew how to do basics and then when I got to high school I became obsessed with makeup. My friends always ask me how I did my makeup and I thought, ‘I should start videoing myself for them.’”

Cram said after she got a new video camera for her birthday last October, she knew she could begin the process of showing people how it’s done. Cram said it took a lot of guts to finally show her first video because she is so shy, but so far she said the feedback has been positive. With 51 subscribers and six videos, she said she has 1,500 total views for all of her videos combined. Ultimately, Cram said she hopes she can get on Michelle Phan’s level someday.

Michelle Phan is one of the most famous and endorsed makeup artists on YouTube. Cram said she had a hard time fathoming the amount of subscribers and views people like that get on a daily basis. Cram said she eventually would like to have cosmetic brands send her products to use in her video. She said every time she films a video, her friends tell her they went out and bought one of the products she used within the same day of viewing the video, so the marketing magic works.

These are some of Mary’s favorite products:

Foundation- Nars Sheer Glow, Mascara- MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash, Concealer – MAC Prolong Wear

Cram said she’s lost track of how many products she truly has. She admitted to being a makeup hoarder and Sephora is basically her favorite place, ever.

So with all of these beauty products, how long does it usually take her to make a makeup tutorial?

“It probably takes me 35 minutes and then I cut it down a ton — like eight minutes,” she said. “Obviously, no one wants to watch me just sitting there for 35 minutes. A lot of it is me thinking ‘okay, now what?’ or me awkwardly looking at the camera. Then my dog is bothering me in the background.

Disclaimer: Her dog, George, is so freaking cute.

“Eventually I want people to comment suggestions on what they want to see from me. I am very open to any ideas people might have.”

Cram said she’s starting to get her videos down to a science, but she’s not perfect. In her first couple of videos, Cram said she would catch herself rushing and would even forget to add a specific product she planned on using. She said in her last tutorial she really took her time, put on some music, and relaxed.

That’s another unique aspect to Cram’s videos. When you watch her videos there is always catchy music playing in the background. She has some talking in her videos to help explain certain techniques, but when she’s just applying, the music is bumping in the background. Cram said she adds her favorite music to the background of her videos so that she does not come off as awkward. She said not many YouTube makeup artists do this, so it helps give her an edge.

Cram said she hasn’t received any hate mail yet, but she has gotten a few comments.

“Most of them go like this, ‘Oh my god, you’re so pretty.,’” she said. “My boyfriend always tells me not to comment back and to be cool. And then my best friends get on there and leave comments. Eventually I want people to comment suggestions on what they want to see from me. I am very open to any ideas people might have.”

You heard the lady! Now go to her YouTube page and subscribe away and leave suggestions in the comments section on what makeup looks you would like her to do.
