Carmen Askerneese will bring the first ever Winter Raider Showcase to Texas Tech Friday at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
“The Winter Raider Showcase is pretty much a free concert for anybody in Lubbock,” said Askerneese, an electronic media and communication major from Dallas.
The concert will feature bands such as Jenn and Matt, Hip, Scotty No!, Maria and the GypsyHouse, Lenora Sol, Thrift Store Cowboys, Veda Moon, and Dry Heeves. Askerneese said there will also be free hot chocolate for guests to enjoy.
“It’s a first time thing and I just thought it’d be cool,” Askerneese said. “I was on the Bledsoe/Sneed Complex Council when I was a freshman and we did something called the Rock ‘n’ Roll Raiders Concert and it was a lot of fun. I want to do that again.”
Askerneese said he started planning and organizing everything for the showcase on his own since August and was able to receive funding from his sponsors, the Bledsoe/Sneed Complex Council, KTXT- FM, and the Residence Hall Association. Through all this planning, Askerneese said he found there is more to making an event happen than just planning and having a venue.
“I did it because, this is going to sound kind of arrogant, but when I graduate I want to get enough to where I don’t need a resume,” said Askerneese. “But we’ll see what happens. I think I’m on the right path right now.”
Askerneese said he likes to try a lot of different things and has been involved in jump starting other programs such as Heads Up Display, which is a video game review show based out of the College of Media and Communication.
“Winter Raider Showcase was kind of a test run to see what all I need to do to make an event happen because I have another event that I want to have in the spring, but I don’t really want to tell you too much about it because you have to wait and see.” Askerneese said.
We’ll keep an eye out for Askerneese’ s upcoming events, but until then, students and the Lubbock community are encouraged to visit the Winter Raider Showcase.
