Tech Democrats Cheer Wendy Davis Candidacy

Rumors have been circulating for weeks of state Senator Wendy Davis (D – Fort Worth) running for Texas governor. Thursday she put those rumors to rest.

The Tech Student Democrats along with BattleGround Texas and the Lubbock County Democratic Party hosted a live screening of Davis’ official announcement for her candidacy as governor.

Lauren Roblez, president of Tech Student Democrats, said her first thought after the announcement was “Let the campaigning begin!”

“It’s really important that Democrats come together especially with such a big person like Wendy Davis running now,” Roblez said.

The Traditions Room in the Student Union Building was jammed, with some people standing in the back while the live feed played.

Sergio Guzmán, a fellow of BattleGround Texas and liaison for Tech Student Democrats, said BattleGround Texas was still getting organized in West Texas but now with a candidate to push for they’re ready.

“I’m really excited,” Guzmán said. “She’s probably the most exciting candidate we’ve had in a long time in Texas. Someone that a lot of people can get behind.”

Davis gained national attention with her filibuster of a proposed Texas law with several abortion restrictions in it. Gov. Rick Perry called a special session of the legislature, which passed the new law.
