Cupcake Wars

The Tech Activities Board hosted “Cupcake Wars” at the ballroom of the Student Union Building on Wednesday evening.

McKenzie Hopson, a junior public relations major from Gatesville, Texas, who helped organize the TAB event, said the event garnished ideas from the TV show of the same name.

Participants had to compete in three decorating challenges on provided cupcakes and decorating supplies: a birthday, superhero, and Texas Tech themed cupcake, Hopson said,Screen Shot 2013-09-19 at 9.26.12 AM

One of the participants, Matthew Wallace, a freshman business major from Gatesville, said this was the first time he had ever made a cupcake.

“Me and my partner had some interesting ideas.” Wallace said, “We made a clown and a batman and then a Raider Red.”

The clown was his favorite because it came out the best, Wallace said.

Wallace and his partner wound up winning the event, Hopson said, even though at first she suggested they make room for more serious contestants.

“We were like ‘Y’all are going to be taking a spot away from somebody who’s actually serious about it, this is ridiculous, you guys are going to [stink], you don’t need to do this,’” Hopson said, “and then they won and we were like ‘Ok, I guess you guys are good.’”

Hopson said last year TAB hosted an event similar to cupcake wars but with cookies, which only gave the participants a few things they could do with cookies — the cupcake allowed for more creativity.

The turnout was better than she had originally expected, she said. Later in the week she had to turn down willing participants.

“As soon as we took it on the website, everyone and their home wanted in,” Hopson said, “so we’ve been fielding phone calls all week about it and I felt bad that we had to turn people down.”

Hopson said hopefully next year TAB will be able to do the event again on a larger scale.
