Saturday the people of Lubbock joined together to participate in the 75th annual March of Dimes to raise awareness and show support for families affected by health problems in infants.

The march allowed the participants to walk through the Texas Tech campus and end at Urbanovsky Park where they were met with cheers, music, and entertainment for all ages.

Chantal Nwosu, a previous participant and student at Tech, said she heard about the march before coming to college, and still keeps the tradition going.

“I heard about this because I did it at home, my senior year, in Dallas,” Nwosu said, “and I thought it was really fun and wanted to do it again.”

While Nwosu participated in the march to spend the day raising awareness, others, such as Sara Silva, who works for the Superior Health Plan company in Lubbock, were marching to show support for their family and friends.

“Actually, my daughter’s swim coach, who is here in Lubbock, had a nephew that passed away because he was born premature,” Silva said, “and we are here to show our support for that family.”

Kim Moyers, whose niece was born 10 weeks early, said the March of Dimes was a very effective organization and helped her niece to become a healthy child.

“My niece was born at two pounds and five ounces,” Moyers said. “She is a healthy five-year-old now, and I believe March of Dimes had a lot to do with that.”

She went on to say how it was her fourth year at the march, and she thought it was a great way to show her love for her niece.

“We are here to celebrate her life,” Moyers said, “and what March of Dimes did to help her.”
